Often I go out walking, taking photos. I take hundreds at a time, hoping for serendipitous good shots.
My current series, Full Bloom, features splashy bright abstracts: spilled color glimpsed through sheer billowing cloth, light refracting glass and water merge exuberant. Wading Pool conveys water currents in a vivid eclectic mix: close-up studies reveal the sinuous line and movement of water.
Spendid in the universal language of color, these images convey the joy of summer.
As a child of the early 60's, I longed to join my older "brothers and sisters" in the various marches of the time: Civil and Woman's Rights, the early Environmental Movement called out though I was yet too young to leave home. Misty eyed, ardent, I'd sing along with The Beatles; Peter, Paul and Mary, Joan Baez, Simon and Garfunkle and Bob Dylan among others.
I lived in Japan as a child. One of my sweetest memories is of the land behind our house in the village where my family lived. There, our landlord kept a traditional garden: through tall wrought bronze gates lay a sumptuous dream... I would sit upon plush emerald velvet moss gazing at Koi or stand, transfixed by the devotional homage to nature.
Japanese art serves as my model and muse. It is my abiding internal template. When my family returned stateside it was to California's southcoast of La Jolla, the "jewel by the sea". Swimming far, far out in the warm ocean each summer was sublime and I infuse that memory into my work.
Scholarships to The Museum of Modern Art in San Diego and then Laguna Beach's School of Art provided meaningful direction when I was a child and young teenager. Upon graduating high school I accepted a full scholarship to The Academy of Art in San Francisco for my undergraduate work.
While studying advertising in graduate school I worked as a designer for a surfwear company, Shorebreak of Australia. After graduation I was hired as an advertising designer on a newpaper, The San Diego Daily Transcript.
As a quiet but passionate activist -before environmentalism was voque- I worked for Greenpeace in San Diego and Earthfirst in Northern California.
As a painter of many years watercolor plein air landscapes were my passion. Now, my ardor is for my photographic work; layer upon layer, day after luxurious expanse of day I work, a half smile of soul satisfaction resting on my face.
