About Jeanette Stevenson

    It occurs to me that some pieces from a soon to completed series recall a theme I would draw repeatedly as a girl: a Japanese woodblock print inspired night scene of a wheat field against a full moon sky. That strains of this familiar composition are surfacing again after many years is strange, marvelous.
    Inspiration can be the quicksilver wonder of complete pieces laid out in my head or a burgeoning fountain of composition, color choice, layout... my fine art and graphic design backgrounds come into harmony- it's a blissful, meditative process.
    I go on what I call "photo safari" for all my photographs; generally this gathering of images is a ritual that precedes a new body of work.
    I'm finishing a soft earth toned set of pictures- the summer bright series has had it's time to shine; as if in response to the season changing I prepare with new work.

    My childhood fostered imagination, whimsy and endless exploration into all things creative. Clay, cloth, wood and especially paper and paint often occupied my small enthusiastic hands- When I wasn’t ardently involved in some project I was reading.      In art school and for years after I lived a bohemian painter's life in San Francisco. In love with golden light before dusk, the lush, invitational expanses of Golden Gate Park's landscapes, the very veins on leaves I was avid to capture all that on paper and canvas...      It is heady and singularly challenging to be an artist- I'm profoundly grateful for my calling.
